Pantries Put New Emphasis on Nutrition

Fast food and obesity have become endemic at all levels of society. To help combat this dangerous trend among low income people we have embarked on a new program that puts the focus on nutrition. With help from a nutritionist from the Food Bank of Delaware, we aim to assure that our pantry food distributions continue to supply the ingredients for balanced healthy meals. The packing lists employed in our stationary pantries (Hope, Zion and St. Stephen’s) are being re-examined and updated in accordance with what is regularly available on the Food Bank menu. We are also considering providing recipes for using various staple items stocked in the pantries, as well as some of the uncommon fruits and vegetables given out at produce distributions at St. Stephen’s and St. Philip’s.

Fun Dates With LCS

Three big events LCS hosts each year are the Volunteer Appreciation Tea, the Room at the Table Free Fundraising Breakfast, and the Hunger Walk Run. We have firmed up dates for all of them. The Volunteer Appreciation Tea will be held at Grace on Sunday February 17. Room at the Table will be held at the DuPont Country Club on Wednesday May 7. The Hunger Walk Run will be held on Saturday September 20 at Rockford Park. We hope you will put these on your calendars and save them! Free Clothing Distributions

In addition to its free food programs, LCS has regular distributions of free clothing for people in need. St. Philips gives out clothing on the first Monday of the month. Hope gives out clothing on the third Thursday. St. Stephen’s planned its distributions (in conjunction with its free produce distributions) on following dates – Feb. 6, Mar. 5, Apr. 16, May 7, June 18, July 9 and Aug. 6. Our partners include the Clothing Bank of Delaware and Tatnall School (at St. Stephen’s).
