Southbridge Grocery Club Planning Begins
LCS staffers recently met with church leaders from New Calvary Baptist Church
in Wilmington
to start planning an LCS grocery club there. New Calvary is located on South Heald Street
in the Southbridge section of Wilmington, which is a distressed community
troubled by crime, under employment, low incomes and environmental concerns.
Initial funding for their grocery club program is being drawn from a $2,000
grant to LCS by the ELCA Division for Church in Society. Additional funding is
sought. Grocery Clubs are designed to serve a set number of families (usually
about 30) by providing them with supplemental groceries once a month. Donations
are accepted but not required from members who take a role in planning and
ordering the club’s food. Plans call for the new club to make its first distribution
by July.
Radio Stations Sign On as
Walk Run Sponsors
Planners for the 2007 LCS Hunger Walk Run are excited about
having WDEL and WSTW back as media sponsors for this year’s event in Rockford Park on September 22. WDEL and WSTW have
the largest share of the local audience which makes their sponsorship
especially appealing. As part of the arrangement, they will have one of their
on-air personalities at Rockford
Tower playing music and
making announcements. Race organizers can also count on a series of public
service announcements and doing an on-air interview during “drive time” in the
days leading up to the Hunger Walk Run.
LCMS Funds LCS Food and
Housing
Lutheran Community Services recently received a check for
$7,500 from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod domestic grant program which was
the first installment of its $15,000 grant commitment for our food and hunger
programs in Wilmington and New Castle County.
This year’s grant is a significant increase from last year’s $10,000 and very
much appreciated!
