LCS has been serving low income families in Wilmington and New Castle County with emergency food, housing and other services since 1959. Originally founded to help senior citizens with their independent living needs, we have evolved into a multi-faceted social service agency with many different programs and locations for people of all ages.

May 2008 News: Miscellaneous Services?

The LCS “More” services include helping seniors of all income levels with modest home repairs. The most needy seniors get “scholarships” for free home repairs. And don’t forget our work in smoking cessation assistance. Last year, we helped almost 7,000 people get free of nicotine addiction. Then there’s free clothing distributions, medical rides for Luther Tower residents and admin support for the Retired Men’s Luncheon Club. We do all that in addition to loans & grants to people facing eviction or foreclosure, and operating food distributions at 10 separate locations. More news from LCS.

Predatory Lending

LCS’s battle against predatory lending practices continues…We sent letters to legislators, mostly signed by constituents – Senators Charlie Copeland, Harris McDowell, and Karen Peterson; Reps. Terry Spence, Gerald Brady, Diana McWilliams, Nick Manolakos, John Kowalko, Greg Lavelle, and Debbie Hudson; plus Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. LCS developed this strategy to combat exploitive payday loans, high interest rates for low income people, exotic mortgages etc. We asked legislators to enact legislation to stop the practice. Only Gerald Brady, Debbie Hudson, and Nick Manolakos responded, to their credit. If you are interested in writing your legislators and need help, contact LCS at 654 8886, x100 or check out a sample letter. Find your local legislator.
